Former world number one Rory McIlroy will take solace from the fact that he finished his BMW Championship well.
Rory McIlroy is still confident he can get back to his best
McIlroy, who has had a miserable season, recorded his worst 36-hole score of the season at the BMW Championship last weekend. However, he made amends for that with two rounds under seventy at Conway Farms on Sunday.
The Irishman said he had nothing to lose heading into the final two rounds at Conway Farms, which he felt helped him produce some of the golf which took him to the summit of the sport in 2012.
"You're going out there with no real goal," said McIlroy after his final round.
"You're just trying to get in quick. You're just trying to play fast, and you end up shooting a decent score. So maybe it is a case of I'm maybe just trying a bit too hard out there and not just letting it all sort of go," added McIlroy, who will have opportunities to collect silverware later this season.
"I'm hitting it really well, and I'm hitting it long as well," said McIlroy, who has already been confirmed for the Australian Open.
"Tee to green, I'm there. My stats would suggest I'm as good if not a little better than last year."
"I've always thought of myself as a really good bunker player, and this year, it just hasn't been up to the same standard," added McIlroy.
"This week, I worked on it. That's a part of the game that I've got to work on a lot."
